The gospel of John is very different from Matthew Mark and Luke. It is non-synoptic. This mean that it did not draw inspiration from the other three gospels. The portrayal of Jesus has some distinctive differences from the other books in the New Testament. To begin, the sequence of event is different from the other Gospels. For example, Jesus never had the last supper in John. His relationship to god is, also, distinctively different. Jesus’ divinity is very obvious. There is no secret. Jesus is very open about being the son of God. The “I am” sayings are meant to connect Jesus to God. He is also referred to as the Logos or the Lamb. Jesus uses a poetic choice of words. Luke wrote about the time after Jesus and the spread of Christianity. The story has no clear theme, though. Why, exactly, was this narrative wrote? There have been several speculations. One idea is that Acts tells the story of the apostles. Acts does seem to support this. The very beginning of Acts tells about Jesus coming to disciples after his death. Then, it tells about Peter and John’s travels. However, the story seems to be more concerned with Paul as the story progresses. It focuses on his life over most of the book. Another theory is that Acts tells how the gospel gets to Rome. As Acts follows Paul, his spread of Christianity leads him Rome. The problem is that there were already Christians in Rome when he arrived. That means that they had already heard of the gospels when he arrived. A third theory is that the Holy Spirit is the focus of acts. I believe this is the case. Acts is filled with miracles and acts performed by Christian followers. They all say is was the Spirit that allowed them to do this. Paul’s travels spread the Spirit around the world. It all connects back how the Spirit and how it spread. The argument against this says that Luke talks more about the spirit than Acts. However, Acts is about the spirit after Jesus. The Spirit isn’t directly cited in Acts, but it is heavily implied that all of the things that occur are to do with the Holy
