Many popular video games, movies, and even songs feature elements of shooting and violence. One of the highest selling video games of all time is Grand Theft Auto V, in which the video game player takes control of 3 different characters all mindlessly killing people. While studies haven’t been entirely conclusive, violence should be partially removed from media as is not a necessary part of life, and violence is mentally injuring children across the world.

Violent video games have not shown an increase of crime rates overall. This is a fairly weak argument because crime rates can fluctuate for many reasons and video games are not going to be the reason for a steady crime rate decrease. Also, in the case of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, the US Supreme Court ruled that video games do not make kids violent so therefore there shouldn’t really be any issue with minors playing violent video games. In this case, the Supreme Court fails to see that video games can make children believe that what they are doing in the game is acceptable in reality and if parents aren’t there for the children, the children may carry out violent acts. Another argument is that these violent video games are a way for children to release stress that builds up due to various issues. There is definitely substance behind this, but there are also non violent ways to let out anger or stress such as playing a sport. If you play a sport to relieve yourself, you are helping out your body physically and emotionally rather than sitting around and playing a game where you are killing people without actual consequences. However, the reality is that violence is what has been negatively shaping our society for many years. Parents need to look out for the signs of violence as previously mentioned so they know for sure that their child is always safe and acting in an appropriate manner. The only issue with parents trying to protect their children is when the parents go crazy on the sheltering. This can cause the child to feel like they always want to break free from their constricted box they go home to every day. The perfect solution to everything is a balance.
