“Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. The form of the communication can be physical or virtual, and may include images, words, or graphic forms” (Cezzar, par. 1). A graphic designer has many duties and responsibilities, requires a certain level of education and specific skills, and has its pros and cons, but it is a rewarding career with many benefits.
A typical day in the life of a graphic designer consists of many duties. The jobs range from preparing and emailing art to other companies, responding to numerous calls throughout the day, and doing computer system backups and maintenance (Malvic, par. 5). There are a variety …show more content…

One of the first steps in becoming a graphic designer, is to get into a good college and take certain classes in high school. Students should choose activities and courses that make them good applicants for being a graphic designer (“Degree Hub”, par. 3). Students should take as many art courses as possible, like drawing, painting, printing, photography, art history and other similar subjects. (“Degree Hub,” par. 3). “According to The Princeton Review, graphic designers report strong communication skills are vital to their professional success. A large part of graphic design involves creating effective advertising and marketing. Graphic designers must be able to sell a product, and they must be able to sell themselves and their work to the companies who hire them” (“Degree Hub,” par. 4). Reading and writing English classes can also help people become good graphic designers (“Degree Hub,” par. 4). “Many graphic design majors require students to study business as well. Some graphic designers become entrepreneurs, operating their own graphic design firms” (“Degree Hub,” par. 6). When accepted into college, there are also many courses available to take. Students must go to college for four years or more depending on the degree. Every designer must be comfortable and have their own style (Reyes, par. 3). Every project is unique. The designer’s style has to leave an imprint on the minds of the audience (Reyes, par. 3). “Leadership is one of the designer’s strongest points when it comes to managing a project. Taking on a new project/responsibility, means managing the extent of authority needed in order to effectively execute the project” (Reyes, par. 6). “Another important advantage of a graphic design artist is their ability to take something that is incomplete and turn it into something remarkable. A graphic designer should be clear about discovering and producing the picture that other people are trying to express with words and desire” (Reyes, par. 12). All of these skills can come with many pros and cons.
Just like any other job, graphic design has its pros and cons. The graphic design profession allows designers to meet and work with people who understand the challenges of graphic design and can give comments and advice when there is an issue (Atanasova, par. 2). However, being surrounded by creative people can be intimidating and frantic. (Atanasova, par. 2). Graphic design is a career that can be done easily from home. While most of the work will only require access to computer and a good internet connection, flexibility should not be an issue
