Jail or prison is probably the last place any person would want to be, unfortunately there are people that for one reason or another end up in a jail. The experience of being locked up is definitely traumatizing, being deprived of your freedom, not being able to do what you want, so many rights taken away. However losing your freedom is not the only issue you face once you go to jail, being there and surviving is the most difficult part. There are so many issue one has to face when going to jail, you find yourself trying to adapt to something you probably have never lived before. Not every person has the same strength, and capacity to understand what it means to spend some months or worse, the rest of your life imprisoned. The majority of people see it as the end of their lives, even if they are only supposed to spend a couple of months in jail. Sadly some people cant’t cope, and their only way out is to commit suicide. It is hypothesised that prisoners who report low social support will experience lower levels of psychological wellbeing than those who reported high levels of social support; that prisoners who are more lonely will report higher levels of suicide risk than those who are less lonely; and will perceive lower levels of support from friends, family and others than prisoners and rate ‘family' support as the highest source of social support. Finally it is predicted that prisoner's who report both high levels of loneliness and low levels of social support will experience higher levels of psychological distress (Brown & Day 2008.) Based on this information we can confirm how important it is to have a strong system. Loneliness can surely be an stressor associated with depression, and suicide. The lack of visits, and encouragement can really place inmates at a higher risk for self
