Gun Control “During the period in which Chicago’s handgun ban was effective (1982 to 2010), 59% of all murders in Chicago were committed with handguns (data unavailable for 2000 to 2002),” (“Gun Control”, Par. 20). Chicago is considered one of the most strict of places when it comes to gun laws and the funny thing about this statistic is that, before Chicago implemented this ban, 48% of all murders were committed with handguns. Gun control as a whole has been one of the most controversial topic of today's world. Some people think that there is too much gun control and some people think there is too little gun control. Criminals find ways to get their hands on guns like on the black market, theft, and smuggling them. For example, drugs are some of the most dangerous and prominent things in the United States, and coincidentally they are illegal, but that doesn't stop people from doing them. These laws on drugs are much like the laws in countries where guns are banned, criminals don't care about them. In Mexico guns are highly governed and citizens can only own certain types of guns, automatic weapons are banned, gun above a specific caliber are banned, and if they wish to transport a gun they must ask a special government agency for permission. Mexico has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world and yet, in 2012, Mexico had 11,309 gun murders (9.97 gun homicides per 100,000 people) compared to the United States that had 9,146 gun homicides (2.97 per 100,000 people).” (“Should More Gun Control Laws be Enacted” Par. 2). Nobody in Mexico is aloud to carry a weapon with them at anytime. However, Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world. With all of the drug cartels, criminals, and guns Mexico is not a good place to be, the criminals have more control over the country than the actual government. From this piece of evidence about Mexico, we can see that criminals are not going to follow by the rules, and all these laws are doings are taking away citizens right to defend themselves and it caused the country to become criminal ridden.
