The string of my most meaningful achievements started last summer during Howard University’s Health Career’s Opportunity Program (HCOP). I learned invaluable lessons that carried me throughout the experiences and tribulations that made up my freshman year. We were taught English, Chemistry, Math, and Biology as rising Freshman in order to get an early feel for what we would be facing during the academic year. These academic classes were supplemented with cultural excursions such as trips to local DC museums, the zoo, and a Peruvian festival DC was having at the time. Summer 2015 made me realize that you could have an amazing career/academic life, along with a great social balance. Thus, HCOP solidified my intention of becoming a medical doctor. I ended up receiving HCOP’s “Most Proactive Student” award, which drives me to live up to the award’s name to this day.
After leaving HCOP and coming back to Howard University to tackle my Freshman year, I was left stunned. HCOP was only a microcosm of what college is really like. Twenty-six students is nothing compared to ten thousand. As the Howard University’s campus became more and more populated, I found myself meeting freshmen and upperclassmen alike with similar passions and goals as me. I was blessed enough to join a variety of clubs and was even allowed to apply to executive board positions as a freshman. I really wanted to take the initiative to be a leader, especially in my chosen field. So, I applied to be GlobeMED’s ghU coordinator. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call from the chapter president to congratulate me on getting the position. Me? Above upperclassmen and the like? I was stunned. Once again, this achievement makes me want to live up to the acclaim that comes with it, and thus fuels my drive to become a medical
