Introduction The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is a public library that functions as a unique statewide system within the United States, serving the information needs on the islands of: Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Today the library boasts a total of 50 state library branches with a wide public client base that caters to all age groups, races, and socioeconomic statuses. HSPLS serves as an information organization in both rural and urban areas. Along with the statewide school system, the library functions under the state government branch of the Department of Education. Itis led by a State Librarian chosen by the Board of Education. In some locations the public library and the school library are the same entity. With an entire state to serve, the importance of a selection policy for librarians and the public that clearly states, “the general goals of the collection and the criteria on which choices are to be made, including priorities, who is being served, and for what purposes” (Sullivan, 2013, p. 45) can aide in assuring the rights and freedoms of all who use …show more content…
This paper will begin with discussing the purpose of the selection policy or as HSPLS refers to it, the collection development policy, and then continue on to discuss the policy itself. In this discussion, each section of the ALA Workbook will be compared to that of the Hawaii State Public Library System Collection Development Policy (HSPLS Collection Development Policy) and the similarities and differences of the two documents will be discussed. Also discussed will be related Hawaii State Library System policies not covered in collection development.
