Henry Ford Henry Ford as a businessman. Henry was born on July 30, 1863 near Dearborn, Michigan. When Henry was a young boy, his father gave him a pocket watch. He took the pocket watch apart and reassembled it as quickly as possible. Not satisfied with farm work, he left the family farm at the age of sixteen. After leaving the farm he headed off for Detroit. While in Detroit, he serviced steam engines and studied bookkeeping. In 1888, Henry Ford married Clara Ala Bryant and later had a son named Edsel. In World War II, Henry mobilized his factories to support the war effort. They produced tanks, Jeeps, and bombers. Henry also romoted the used of aviation technology. Henry also built village industries (small factories) where people could work and farm in the different seasons. He established schools in several areas of the country. He also established an indoor/outdoor museum. Henry was the one who built the model T also known as “Tin Lizzie” He later built the Model A, a two-cylinder eight-horsepower car. The Model A was actually a disappointment, it was outsold by Chevrolet and Plymouth. Henry took the idea of an assembly line from a meatpacking industry. In his earlier years he build raced cars to demonstrate that he produced reliable vehicles. In 1914 Ford increased the daily wage of eight hours for $5 a day. In 1932 Ford introduced the first V-8.
