Herbert F. Lubalin is one of the most memorable graphic designers who has prominently impacted the world of graphic design; he undoubtedly inspired graphic designers of his time and of the future. Herbert F. Lubalin was born on March 17, 1918, in New York, United States. “While in high school, Lubalin showed no inclination toward a graphics career other than for repeated renditions of some highly erotic nude drawings of Tarzan and Jane, which quickly earned him a reputation of a dirty young man”. At just seventeen years old, Lubalin began his college life at the private institution Cooper Union, located in New York City, New York. This is where he learned the basics of typography which very quickly became his fascination.
Lubalin loved the fact that a typeface had the power to instantly change the way words came across to the viewer (NYtimes). Perhaps it was his new found interest in design which led him to enter an outdoor poster competition that was for students and professionals. He made appearances in many graphic design articles that were featured both nationally and internationally, some of which he was the author of. To name a few: “Art Direction, American Artist, Popular Photography, Communication Arts, Graphics Today, Graphis, Idea, and Gabrauchsgraphik.” (Adcglobal). Lubalin had a passion for inventiveness which was a major motivator for constantly being on the search for something new. He was such an inspiration that Print magazine featured him in its 1969 issue, “Great Graphic Designers of the 20th Century”. “In 1974, Lubalin created and art directed Upper and lower cases which was a publication that showcased the International Typeface Coporation’s Typefaces, which he also co-founded…” (AIGA). 1981marked the death of the man who was a boundary breaker on both visual and social
