High School Case Study

My case study follows one student who is currently performing slightly below grade level in reading. I will refer to this student as “Jerry”. In this first part of the case study I will discuss Jerry’s family and home environment, any known academic information, his current stage of reading development, and direction of remediation. Jerry is an eight year old boy in the third grade at ABCD Elementary. He lives with his mother, father, and four siblings. Jerry has an older sister Kate who is nine and an older brother Billy who is 11. He also has younger siblings, his sister Marie who is five and a baby brother Tommy who is a year old. After meeting with his teacher she mentioned that if given the opportunity Jerry can be somewhat mischievous. She did say that Jerry is for the most part a well behaved student and is respectful towards his classmates. From what I have observed Jerry becomes shy or reserved when he senses that he might be called on to answer a question or when he has to take on a role to be a leader during small group. While observing Jerry in small group he continues to take a passive but cooperative role in group activities. For example, during literacy center time each student had to read a page in a book aloud, Jerry is not eager to read his part but he does what is required of him. The only time I have observed Jerry take on a direct leadership role is during recess or physical education. He test results also have shown that math is becoming harder for him because he had poor reading fluency skills, and cannot process word problems. Presently, Jerry is an eager learner who rarely gets in trouble. He still has difficulty focusing, and can only perform two-step of directions with accuracy. When asked about reading, he will tell you that his favorite books are chapter books, but he is unable to read them without some difficulty. Instead focusing on comprehension he aims to please his teacher and I worry that he will become more discouraged as he goes through the upper grades. He knows he is behind his peers, but does not comprehend to what extent. I fear that parent support is dwindling as evidence of his low grades on his progress report for completed homework and
