In elementary school, the concluding bell signals an exodus from learning that my peers desperately anticipate. However, I did not resemble the typical student as I dreaded the end of the school day because it indicated the commencement of labor at my parents’ restaurant. While my classmates cherished the evening by relaxing in the blissful tranquility of rural Indiana, I would arrive from school to assist my parents by preparing food or taking orders from customers too weary to cook dinner themselves. Each evening I would spot my classmates engaging in an epic struggle of hide and seek while I was imprisoned in the restaurant to support the family venture. Despite a lack of transportation, I participated in numerous extracurricular activities such as the Yearbook Club and the Math Team, trekking miles in the vicious Wisconsin winter in my commitment to succeed. Furthermore, I acquired another job in order to bear my family’s monetary burden and accumulate money for college. Using the wages, I purchased a plethora of exam preparation resources to help me perform exceptionally well on the ACT and the SAT. After saving enough to buy an obsolete 1991 Toyota Camry in a weather-batter silver, I participated in numerous extracurricular activities, was elected President of Student Council, and competed in the Academic Decathlon team. Despite these accomplishments, I continue to challenge myself to succeed due to my commitment, strengthened by my cultural values, drives my pursuit of the American Dream. I am resolved to improve my standardized scores and ace the thirteen AP exams I will be taking. I strive to pursue the American Dream through the devotion underscored by my culture and challenging myself to overcome social and economic hindrances. My struggle in conquering these obstacles and the struggles I faced from trudging home and laboring in the restaurants instills in me a sense of accomplishment and pride. I no longer dread the end of the school day as a senior in my waning high school career.
