The Camera

How has the invention of the camera contributed to the need of developing better visual recording devices in order to display proof and evidence in crime scenes and the help the witnesses remember what they saw through images?

The camera is one of the most major inventions of all time created during the Industrial revolution. What started as a ‘magic box’ projecting an image to one place to another using principles of optics, became a tool of trade, one of the arts. The second camera made already took decent photos so why keep on making new and better ‘magic boxes’? What are the benefits of showing proof of events and happenings and memory through images?

The first camera, or more of a projecting box made was the camera obscura, it was the first way to project an image from one place onto another surface. It was a massive leap in innovation because of the fact that no one had ever seen anything like it before. It was the first tool to project an image, even if it was upside down. To take the picture the exposure had to last about 8 hrs which of course gave the sun time to move and therefore one can see shadows on both sides of the picture. Niepce took this with a primitive camera, which was a developed version of the previously mentioned camera obscura. The image above has been manually enhanced so the details and main shapes are visible. The original picture is far more fuzzy and it is extremely hard to make anything out of it except minor details.
