Throughout my life, academics have always been the principal affair, trumping sports and clubs. This ideal has imprinted on me a drive to work hard and be academically motivated. Colorado State’s Honors Program will allow me to be more involved than ever in academics through both the requirements and opportunities the program allows- seminars, research, and a sense of community.
Ms. Dobosz, my English teacher, takes advantage of the small size of her 8th period senior class by focusing class on discussion. She enables us, the students, to reach the point she is trying to convey, directing us towards specific topics if we start concentrating on unrelated subjects. I adore this type of learning. Everyone is able to participate during the discussions, so we gain an understanding of how other people think. Honors seminars will have the same beneficial style of learning that requires active participation as well as thoughtfulness regarding the material, combined with fostering a sense of community. I would be excited to participate in these seminar type classes in college as early and often as possible.
In my mind, the Honors Residential Learning Community would be an equally positive opportunity through allowing students of different perspectives, but who all hold a similar love of learning and quest for knowledge, to come together. Students who have similar academic objectives will be more likely to form lifelong friendships, and see eye to eye with the other people in the learning community. I would like to be part of, and contribute to, that lifelong community. Solely in terms of collegiate years, I want to feel like I’m part of a smaller community than the campus-wide or class-wide community of Colorado State. While the Natural Resources and Sustainability learning community is also appealing, I believe the Honors learning community opens up access to other opportunities on top of it’s sense of community and academic
