I have been taught from a very young age not to judge a person by their words, but by their actions. For the success and failures of life show the paths of which one has journeyed and and plans to endure. The hardest path that I ever had to venture came about during my sophomore year in high school. In this year I was determined to distinguish myself from my peers and show that Tiana Johnson could handle the rigor of college classes, and - in less than three years - handle college itself.

The honor program is an organization through which benefits of merit scholarships, special recognition at commencement, enhanced transfer opportunities, and the excitement and intensity of special seminars with talented professors are awarded to the members. Honor students attend off-campus trips and attend cultural events. Its members also lead the Abeles Dialogues in the spring.
I am extremely excited to begin college and take on the challenge of Honors courses. Honors courses will both expand my knowledge and ability in not only engineering, but many aspects of my life. I truly fit all the criteria of an Honors Student. I am confident that I share the same values and characteristics of an Honors Program member such as going above and beyond and examining the world around me. My numbers alone do not show my character and commitment to scholarship and learning, or my commitment to the Barry County community around me, but my actions do.

Throughout my life, academics have always been the principal affair, trumping sports and clubs. This ideal has imprinted on me a drive to work hard and be academically motivated. Colorado State’s Honors Program will allow me to be more involved than ever in academics through both the requirements and opportunities the program allows- seminars, research, and a sense of community.
My URAP internship was held at the JSNN in Greensboro, NC. There I worked under my PI Dr. Shanthi Iyer. The duration of the program was from May 16th to July 6th. As a physicist I used my programming knowledge in C++ to help aid in the understanding and usage of modeling simulations, comprehension of the experimental work being done and the underlying physics of semiconductors. Utilizing my classroom coursework to not only aid in grasping new concepts, but applying previous knowledge to be able to formulate solutions while reaching conclusions.

Perseverance through the highs and lows of life is a quality that is not easily attained. This is a quality that takes time and reflections, one that I am tuning as I go through college and onwards on my path to becoming a physician. However, this comes with experience, moments in our lives where we are on our feet one second and then fall down the next but manage to get back up. This is one of the various reasons I am interested in becoming a fellow. I admire the fact that students are expected to do things on their own, to build connections at home and overseas, to be able to persevere through problems that occur, and at the same time delve into a research topic and personalize it to their interests.
