Cultural competence is having the knowledge, respect, and reflection of another culture. Linguistic competence is having knowledge of a language and how it works. Performance is using your knowledge to apply what you know linguistically or culturally. It is what you do with the knowledge that you have. A competent person should be able to successfully perform.

It is offensive to enter a setting with one person or a group of people without saying “Sabah-alkhair” in the morning. This is said by every Arabic speaker in the morning. The expected response is “Sabah-alnoor,” which means may your day be filled with light.
The fourth greeting is welcome. Arabs are very big on hospitality. In Yemen, a person’s social status heavily depends on welcoming others and providing more than enough in terms of food and comfort. Te-fadal or ahla-we-sahal means welcome in Arabic. It is used when someone enters your house. There is no immediate response, however, before one leaves, they say “Akrum-kum-Allah” (May god give you more). The host must respond by saying forgive me for any inconveniences.
The last greeting deals with traveling. When a person comes home arrives safely, you tell them “Al-humdullah- alsalamah.” This means thank god for your safety. This is said by people greeting a person who has arrived safely from another location. You only say one time and that is the first time you seen them upon their return.
