Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri, and died December 26, 1972 in Kansas City Missouri. He was our 33rd president of the United States who is known for leading us through the end of World War II and through the beginning years of the Cold War. Many citizens do not know what he did for other countries, though (Steinburg). Harry S. Truman was a man of courage because he fought against racism in the armed forces, made very hard decisions that ended up saving our country, and helped contain the spread of communism in countries that needed help. Before his presidency, when World War I entered the United States in 1917, 33 year old Harry Truman immediately volunteered to fight for his country. Truman even recognized the letter chart you use when you get your eyes tested because with his eyesight he couldn’t get into the war. He was sent overseas a year later and served in France. With no experience in foreign policy, Truman had no choice but to be put into the role of commander in chief and charged with ending a world war. In the first six months of his term, he dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ended World War II. Japan was split between surrender or fighting to the end. They chose to fight. The bombs Truman used were created to destroy and kill on a massive scale. As president, it was Truman’s decision if the weapon would be used with the goal to end the war (Biography). If we were to drop a bomb, it could potentially come back and hurt us in the end. If we were to not drop a bomb, the Japanese could harm our country first and ruin our economy.This was a crucial decision which shows Truman’s courage, and which took a toll on each
