I decided to choose The Hunger Games as my choice of media. I decided on this movie because it was very popular and I also read the books. The Hunger Games is an actual game in the series that pits people against each other to fight till the death. The series is about a woman who takes her sisters place in the hunger games, defy the odds and wins. At first glance, this movie appears to be woman positive and in a lot of ways it is. However, gender stereotypes creep into the story line as usual. Katniss, the woman who takes her sisters spot, playing on the emotional stereotype of women. Katniss is immediately deemed as unlady like because she talks to much and is blunt, her publicity coach repeatedly tries to coach her and change her looks, mannerisms and way of talking to make her more lady like. When she is first interviewed by the media, she receives poor reviews because of this. As the movie progresses, Katniss begins showing her skills in fighting and archery, people are so surprised that she, a female could actually keep up that her reviews increase. Katniss goes on to wine The Hunger Games, saves a man in the process and wins her nations respect. …show more content…

I feel as if movies with strong female leads, such as Katniss could help increase young women interest in stereotypical masculine things such as archery. The Hunger Games also allows the woman lead to save the male. I found this to be the best part about the movie, because in so much literature we see the “damsel in distress”. I would much rather my future daughter, niece, etc to believe that they could save a man than believe they always have to be saved. Literature, movies, magazines are everywhere and if they promoted more female powerful story lines I think we would see a rise in female
