In Harper Lee’s book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, the Finch children begin seeing their father Atticus Finch differently as the story goes on. It has to do with how things are perceived vs. reality which The Truman Show touches on.

Up until later sections of this book, the way the kids viewed Atticus was as a placid and innocent old man. The narrator stated, “Atticus was feeble… He sat in the living room and read.” This lets the reader know the feelings towards Atticus they have by describing him so mellow. At this point, Atticus Finch is just their father and they say that he “didn’t do anything.” referring to his activities and hobbies. Scout explains, “…Jem and I watched out father take the gun… [T]ime had moved to a nauseating crawl.” This shows the relationship between her perception of her father to what she is now seeing of him, the sharpshooter that killed the dog in the street. This gun toting Atticus Finch is not a man she is familiar with. After this, Sheriff Tate boasts to Jem about how good of a shot Atticus is but Atticus retorts saying, “Hush, heck. Let’s go back to town.” suggesting to the reader that he’d like to return the kids’ perception of him back to what it was
