Introduction

Adolescence is a time of significant physical, sexual, emotional and psychological change. This life stage can begin as early as ten years of age and last until the age of 22. During this time, the changes can impact the youth and family in both positive and negative ways (Rogers, 2016). While most adolescents develop at fairly predictable rates, there can be some functions that are earlier or later than the norm. This paper will discuss the physical (biological), psychological and social aspects of development, and factors that might impact the development timeline. It will also examine these developments through various theoretical and conceptual lenses.
Physical and Sexual Development in Adolescence

In boys, early maturation can result in increased physical ability, taller statute, and increased aggressiveness. The greater physical size can lead to admiration from peers and increased self- confidence. Conversely early maturation may cause the male to feel more social pressure to be more responsible relative to his age. In girls, early maturation may include anxiety, depression, and earlier sexual activity (Rogers, 2016). Early physical maturation can impact adolescents from a psychological and behavioral perspective. Boys, who are physically more developed at age 12, compared with their less physically developed peers, demonstrate increased overt hostile feelings. And at ages 14-16 they show increased internalized distress symptoms.
