As a student of the Business course at Birkbeck, the purpose of my essay is to critically analyze my learning experience while attending the “Introductions: Understanding the Business World” class. I will discuss the opportunities that this module has offered in relation to its structure and organization explaining the extent to which my past experience has contributed to my learning. Will my point of view reflect what the module aims students to realize?

When my tutor explained the importance and the efficacy of the PDP, I decided to set up my own action plan to evaluate my progress at different learning stages. First, I recognized the goals that I wished to achieve dividing them into two categories based on their priority. A significant point is that all my learning goals were SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. For instance, I planned to adjust the inaccuracies highlighted in the comments left by the tutor in the previous assignment before committing to the next one. Also, I aimed to manage my time more efficiently by creating a weekly task schedule. However, even though the grade in the first assignment has been left before I started to undertake the second one, still now the second assignment has not been assessed affecting my PDP and constraining me to work on my writing mistakes. A quicker and thorough evaluation would have enabled me to analyze better my level, although I am aware that tutors have heavy workloads to manage. Although the majority of my background is shaped mostly on working experience, the structure of the “Introductions: Understanding the Business World” module has combined theory with real business examples. My tutor introduced the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in two steps by providing an overall explanation of the content and then analyzing the Primark ethical case study. In addition, I had to individually discuss two further business case studies in the second assignment and make a presentation suggesting improvements of the current CSR policy of an organization in the third one. Furthermore, several discussions have been done in class while approaching the CSR topic. This method enabled me to think, wonder and reason before getting the notions. I found it very helpful as I could use my past experience and my intuition to perceive and incorporate the knowledge in a more efficient manner. Even though this pattern is not common in Italy where I have done my previous studies, I think that educational institutions around the world should adopt it in order to train students with more comprehensible learning.
