Rhetorical Analysis of Engineering in Communities Learning by Doing
"Engineering in Communities Learning by Doing" was written in 2012 by Jamie Goggins, a senior lecturer at the College of Engineering and Informatics at University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland. He has over 14 years of experience in consultant, construction, advising work and research on many projects. He has two doctorate and three research master degrees. He writes “service learning as a pedagogical tool provides a means of connecting students’ academic study with community and society” (1). The reason the author explains the purpose at the beginning of his article is he wants his audiences to know the purpose while they are reading through the article. He also writes, “Service learning is currently seen as having priority within higher education in Ireland” (1). To support his argument the author gives an example to his audiences that service learning program works very well in Ireland’s higher education. Goggins says, “That civic engagement by students at both the local and international level can have positive benefits” (2). Service learning is a new program started in Ireland, the audiences need to know how the process works. The author explains the process, and he uses simple vocabulary, it makes it easy to understand. He uses headings in his article and explains the headings with details. Goggins writes, “The service learning gives students the idea of learning not only for tests, but for doing real work” (4). The author tells audiences that service learning motivates students to not only learn the information to get good grad, but to learn it for using it in the practical work. He also says “These initiatives allow students to work with and in local communities, international communities and multi-disciplinary groups as part of their academic courses” (2).
