In today’s society, one of the biggest decisions a high school senior must make is where he or she wants to go to college. Before they make this decision, however, they must decide whether they prefer a public or a private college. When it comes to choosing which college to attend, this is very crucial because not all colleges are the same. Although both public and private colleges have the same goal to educate people, they have differences in expenses, cultural diversity, and size. With today’s economy where it is, one of the biggest concerns about college is tuition and its affordability. Therefore, it is understandable that more students choose the cheaper public college over the more expensive private college. Be as it may, the main reason public colleges are more affordable is because they are funded by the state. Private colleges, on the other hand, rely completely on tuition and donations for funding. Because of this, it is important that students are exposed to people from all walks of life. In that case, students who attend private colleges often have the advantage over students who attend a public college. One of the main reasons for this is that public colleges charge more for out-of-state tuition, thus resulting in more in-state students and not very many out-of-state students. Private colleges, on the other hand, do not charge more for out-of-state students, and as a result, they pull students from many different states and backgrounds. This means that the student body of private colleges is more diverse, and it also means that each student is exposed to many different cultures thus preparing students for the real world.
