Building an effective and sustainable Human Resources department is a task that cannot happen overnight or even within a month or three months. The Human Resources department is an entity that will continue to change; regardless of any changes within the department. To build an effective and sustainable department the Human Resources leader needs to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the current team, the Human Resources department will need to continue to learn as the trends change, the department will need to continue to ensure that is aligned with the goals of the overall leadership team as well as the tasks the department is completing. With each Presidential election, come changes that affect the way Human Resources is run. Past President Obama is a perfect example of making changes that would affect Human Resources departments. He created a healthcare plan which greatly impacted businesses with costs, plan changes and ongoing dates of implementation. The House of Representatives passed a bill in May 2017 that affects the way employees can manage their overtime. This bill is supported by President Trump. This could create changes for companies throughout the United States. Many of the major changes like the healthcare and the overtime make the news, which is an easier way to catch the changes. It is important to stay current with Human Resources trends and changes, which can be handled through membership to local and national Human Resources groups. Employees should be encouraged to become certified in Human Resources through SHRM or Human Resources Certification Institute. These organizations certifications require continuing education. Membership to SHRM also provides a monthly magazine reviewing trends and changes in the workplace. SHRM also provides access to professional articles, seminars, and forms such as job descriptions. An important piece to being able to align with the business goals is looking at the staffing. The department needs to have the staff in the areas that focus on the needs of department. Investing in a Human Resources department is necessary to be able to align with the company. A Human Resources department needs an effective recruiting strategy to ensure top talent to drive the productivity and success of the company (Career Addict, March 2017). This could mean the department needs a recruiter if there are turnover issues or the industry has high turnover. The next duty of Human Resources is reducing turnover or keeping turnover low. Not being able to retain good employees is costly and directly affects the business bottom line. In line with reducing turnover is increasing employee engagement. Career addict states it is often overlooked which is surprising. Employee engagement is a heavy focus in the Human Resources area but perhaps, not something management believes will affect the business goals. The last area is compliance and law.
