Health care as a whole in our country is evolving, becoming more complex as the health care needs of our respective communities change and also becoming complicated. Conversely, changes in the nursing profession are occurring on an everyday basis in an attempt to keep up with the different dynamics happening in our health care landscape today. These changes include, added responsibilities, increased demand in additional training and nurses charged with furthering their education. As a future nurse leader who will act as a catalyst between the patient and physician, I will have the opportunity to enhance my capabilities and efficiency in improving the care of my patients, it will enable me to understand the conditions of my patients since I will be able to focus on communication skills, use of technology as well as work with other interdisciplinary teams. I will implement this recommendation by standing up for my rights as a Registered Nurse by practicing my competency and skills to be able to always serve my patients. I will always provide the best possible care no matter where the situation may be and always protect my patient's rights through advocacy.

The need of continuing education is necessary for us to advance our skills and knowledge as nurses caring for the general population. However, advanced knowledge that goes beyond the science of nursing is crucial to excel in the field. Excellence in nursing requires us to be politically active and informed of the constant changes that occur within the health care system. It is also important to be aware of the accessible resources and organizations to be able to seek the proper resources needed.

NURS 6050: Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health Discussion 2: Nurses as Leaders in Health Care Reform With the changing trends in health care, there is the need to redefine the scope and practice of healthcare providers. The recommendations put forth by the Institute of Medicine aims at “maximizing the full potential and vital role of nurses in designing and implementing a more effective and efficient health care system” (The national academy of science, 2011).
