2.5 Empirical Review
Empirical research is a way of gaining knowledge by means of direct and indirect observation or experienced. Empirical evidence the record of other researchers’ direct observations or experiences can be analyzed quantitatively or qualitatively (Read et al., 2010). Through quantifying the evidence or making sense of it in qualitative form, a researcher can answer empirical questions, which should be clearly defined and answerable with the evidence collected usually called data. Empirical review helps a researcher to design a research method as compared to others who did related studies. The research having reviewed the studies can use the same methodology used to testify whether a phenomena yields the same results for decision

However, Walter and Karina (2003) concluded in the stdy investigating the effectiveness of succession planning in China. , researches in China on succession planning have been done extensively for Chinese SMEs and their impact on business growth. Walter and Karina studied business continuity in China in relation to succession planning. The area which was overlooked in the study of SME in China is the business continuity and sustainability. The results showed that, in the information age, organisations particularly Small-Medium sized Enterprises in China are challenged to compete and survive in the rapidly changing environment brought about by globalisation of markets. The study examined the model of succession employed to leadership processes for sustainability of manufacturing companies. The results revealed that, succession planning is important to ensure management continuity as a reason for leadership for succession. However the study concluded that, most organisations in Malaysia do not practice succession planning. The study results showed further that, majority of businesses don’t have a model for successful succession for sustainable business. The study also showed that some factors hindering succession planning in Malaysia manufacturing included, knowledge and skills in developing succession planning, fear of handing over to next generation and negative attitude towards successors (Tan, 2009).
Gature, et al., (2013) studied the succession planning and sustainability of retail SMEs business in Kenya. The study concentrated in sustainability of business after the exist of founder in the leaderip of business. The results used content analysis showed that, only 42% of businesses were sustainable after the exist of the founder in leadership.
