A leader is a person who can influence others and who has managerial authority. According to Yukl (2006) leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it. It is the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives. A leader is a very important person in the tourism industry. Leadership is an important function in small businesses to large industries. Leadership and management represent two completely different business concepts. Leadership is commonly defined as establishing a clear vision, communicating the vision with others and resolving the conflicts between various individuals who are responsible for completing the organisation. Management is the organization and coordination of various economic resources in a business. Leadership can have a significant impact on an organizations performance. The way in which a manager makes decisions, delegate’s responsibility and interacts with employees can affect the entire organization.
Leadership styles can affect communication and productivity. Bureaucratic leaders tend to slow up communication by checking to make sure that every part of the message and delivery method follows strict company guidelines. This can tamper communication and prevent employees from getting instructions and information they need to do their jobs.
Leadership helps shape culture. Culture in turn shapes leadership. They both drive performance.
