McMinn 4-MAT Review: Psychology, Theology and Spirituality Toya V Mitchell Liberty University Review The text Psychology, Theology and Spirituality in Christian Counseling written by Dr. Mark McMinn brings psychology, theology and spirituality together within the counseling office. Throughout the book McMinn presents several challenges that counselors face within their profession, spiritual relationship and personal self (McMinn, 2011). These challenges include areas of competence, blurred personal-professional distinctions, training difficulties, dominant views of mental health, lack of scientific foundations and ethical standards.
Because of the division of science in religion discussed in chapters 1 and 2, there is very little room for interaction among psychology and religion, especially in the earlier years of psychology. Going into chapter 4, the author gives a comprehensive overview of different worldviews while discussing what they are and the importance of a Christian entering into the counseling profession to have a Christian worldview. Worldviews are learned through various influences and shape our understanding of the world, which gives both insight and distorted thinking. I also strongly believe that now more than ever there is a great need for professional psychologists who are culturally sensitive and competent and who can therefore tailor their therapies to individual cultures to allow for the most effective treatment. Loma Linda’s offering of “doctoral training in psychology within an academically and culturally stimulating environment” allows me to trust that I will be excellently prepared. Being a part of a health science university will also allow me to be adequately trained in the mental health field. Through Loma Linda University’s many resources around the area such as the Mental Health Department of San Bernardino and the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial V.A. I became a school counselor simply because I wanted to live a life of meaning and be a force for good in the world. Throughout life, having real and honest conversations that support growth, positive change, and owning responsibility are critical to self-actualization. I want to empower my students to give their best effort in all areas of life, not just their education. I believe that simple encouragement in this type of environment is the key to positive change, and I wanted to dedicate my professional life to reflect that belief. I whole-heartly believe in the holistic approached to a balanced and fulfilling life and being a school counselor is a unique career that fulfills this value.
This relationship motivates me to become an inspiration for others, because helping others heals your own wounds in the process. Making positive connections and conveying inspiration to others is what has led me to Seattle Pacific University. Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. As a senior in high school, and an incoming college freshman, I believe that Illinois State University is a good fit for me for various reasons, including the School of Psychology, its proximity to my home and therefore my family, as well as the fact that I am quite accustomed to the campus atmosphere. Growing up, children are always asked what they want to be when they grow up. For most kids, the most common answers include a doctor,a vet, a firefighter and the most funniest, a superhero. For me I started off wanting to be a Pediatrician, but later on as I got older, I loved the idea of hearing people's troubles and problems. I participated in many clubs in school for peer mediation, problem solver, As well as I was in counseling, due to a bullying issue in elementary and middle school. As I got to middle school, I learned that I wanted to be a school counselor, reason being my school counselor(s) helped me throughout my school years.
I find the most significant and most impactful in deciphering and confirming my counseling career has to be learning about the Identity Model. I believe that I do already live a life of integrative awareness where I am able to practice my own identity while accepting others. After reflecting and looking at all of my relationships and its effect on my life has helped me gain a better understanding of how my mind works. It has also led me to ponder on the various techniques I am applying to my everyday life in regards to these theories. I thoroughly enjoy learning about Rogerian theory where it implies of a more person centered approach and this I can apply with my personal/love life.
The American dream was defined by historian James Truslow Adams to be “that vision of a land-dwelling in which life should be well, wealthier, and fuller for everyone, with increased opportunity for each individual according to their skills or accomplishments” in 1931. But our society has experienced vast changes from 1931 to 2016. Confidence in the American Dream among people is becoming inexistent. Statistics show as of 2014 nearly half of Americans state the American Dream is dead.
Service and outreach in the public interest. Looking back in my high school day my mind was clueless. Many people would ask what I want to do in life; my answer was simply, reaching others potentials in life. I really was not sure how, when, where or who I would assist with life endeavors. But, I was certain that Counseling was my field of interest.

A lot of people in my country don’t believe mental health exist. In black community or my country in general we seem to believe we are strong, nothing can break us down, it has gotten into us so much that we don’t believe in mental illness. There is also a social stigma for health professionals studying any psychiatry or psychology course in my country it is seem irrelevant, we have just one percent of mental health workers in my country.
