There are many core principles encompassed by the mission and values of Pacific University's Physician Assistant Studies program that I know will make Pacific University a great match for me. Ensuring high quality care for patients, valuing diversity, and lifelong learning of evidence based medicine are concepts that should be at the core of healthcare. Also important to me is the need to help underserved populations. Currently working as a medical assistant at a primary care physicians office in Hilo, Hawaii I work with many individuals from underserved communities of the island and I see the need for greater healthcare access in these areas, and I am now committed to continuing to help the underserved as I further my career.

Science is the greatest factor in all medical care, but it is not the only factor to consider. Working at a multi-specialty center as a medical assistant gave me an edge to witness first-hand the ‘un-taught’ aspect of medical practice; the emotions, the uncertainties, and the unbroken resolve. The science in medicine is the hope to relieve the uncertainty, the fear, and the anger we face upon sickness. This is the space where I have learned to empathize with patients, where I have a natural sense of care for strangers, and where I enjoy investing my time.
As a child of two nurses, I have always been partial to the medical field. The career stability is also an aspect that draws my attention to the profession. The pursuit of well-being is an essential part of human nature and individuals are capable of shaping their own nature based on specific purposes or objectives. At a professional level, clinicians have the right to pursue higher academic degrees if desired. The physician assistant (PA) profession has recently experienced a period of turmoil due to new proposed ideas of endorsing an entry-level clinical doctorate. In 2009, a vast majority of PAs opposed to the idea of an entry-level PA doctorate during a PA Clinical Doctorate Summit, recommending instead those who desire to expand their education, to pursue non-PA-specific doctoral degrees (Coplan, 2011). However, to analyze the entry-level doctorate proposal it is important to distinguish the benefits and cons of entry-level doctorates and postgraduate doctorates, the importance of a PA’s clinical experience, and the nature of continuing professional development.
From getting an indigent patient’s medical bills paid to educating a patient about a disease process so they could make the right medical decisions to teaching a colleague through understanding a difficult work process and so forth. Physician assistants have healed me through various medical ailments such as recovering from sprained ankles, sore throats, and a torn ACL. Physician assistant careers are growing rapidly, and I know that physician assistants have a daily impact on patients’ health. Physician assistants have the ability to have one on one medical relationship with patients. I was inspired of how a nurse, doctor, physician, therapist, nutritionist and so much more specialist can just help another person’s life by the knowledge they have encoded; to make a person feel happy without evening having a real bond with them. I have always been passionate about working in the medical field. When I finally hit my junior year in high school I’ve never been more interested in this field. I started taking courses directing me towards the medical field such as, medical terminology, chemistry and the nursing assistant class offered at East High School.
