Evolution is one of the most controversial scientific theories in America. The publishing of Origins of Species by Charles Darwin was hugely significant for Science and the way in which we understood the world. Despite having reasoned evidence for its existence it is still being denied to this day by the religious community in the United States. In this expository essay I will present the reasons for why the hypothesis for evolution is strong and also the reasons why strong scientific reasoning continues to be rejected. I will also explore how attitudes towards evolution have progressed over the years and how this has influenced the overall perception of this scientific theory. “In the past decades creationism has given rise to pseudoscientific movements, such as Intelligent Design, which discredit the existence of evolution to bolster the explanation that the universe and life are the products of an intelligent cause. “(Caetano-Anollés 2016) This system of thought argues that only an intelligent creator could create a universe so complex and be capable of creating human life. “The Intelligent Design movement has found creative ways to disguise its creationism agenda as a 'scientific research program’ and has applied numerous tactics to misinform the public, convey vague, contradictory, exaggerated and unproven claims, and curtail the teaching of evolution in schools and scientific progress” (Caetano-Anollés 2016) People who advocate for this argument are opposed to natural selection because they believe God created the world as it is and he did this in a perfect manner. Due to a belief in their faith, they have taken strong measures to spread their beliefs. The hypothesis of intelligent design has little to no merit and has been discredited as pseudoscience. It lacks any scientific nuance, however it is accepted by those who follow religion because it relies on faith. It also rising in popularity due to people’s misunderstandings leading them to believe it makes better sense than evolutionary theory.
