How Animal Testing is Ethically Wrong Animal testing has existed since 500 B.C. in Ancient Greece (Sánchez, Serrano). Animal testing used to be acceptable because animals were tested to help find information to create medications to cure and benefit people that had never been discovered before. Back then, there was no other way to gather this information, but because the world has advanced since then, people question why scientists continue animal testing. When scientists test on animals for medical research, some people think it is acceptable if there is no alternative. Animals and people share many characteristics and responses, including the ability to feel, think, act, and experience pain. Not only do animals and humans share characteristics, but they also have remarkably similar responses to pain, such as both humans and animals scream, for example ("Save the Animals: Stop Animal Testing"). Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, wrote, "There is no fundamental difference between man and the higher mammals in the mental facilities" ("Do Animals Have Feelings? Examining Empathy in Animals"). Therefore, animals have proven to have the same rights humans do to be treated equally. Causing pain to an animal is equivalent to causing hurt to a human ("Save the Animals: Stop Animal Testing"). Animals are commonly injected with toxicity tests such as Draize and the LD50 test, notorious for causing excruciating pain and suffering to tested animals. "In the Draize test, the substance or product being tested is placed in the eyes of an animal. Then the animal is monitored for damage to the cornea and other tissues in and near the eye. This test is intensely painful for the animal, and blindness, scarring, and death are generally the results" ("Save the Animals: Stop Animal Testing"). Animal rights are violated when they are being poisoned and poked while being tested on by scientists, all for the safety of cosmetics, even if it requires the loss of several animals losses. Since animals have similar, if not exact, responses and characteristics to humans, causing pain and suffering to animals is parallel to causing pain to humans.
