Bullying is a major issue facing today’s youth. Over the course of the past few years bullying has become such a concern that many states have adopted laws against it. However, the issue evolves as time goes on and now cyber bullying exists. Cyber bullies can insult others over the internet with no need to be nearby the person they are insulting.
In some instances, cyberbullies have used these and other mediums to post potentially embarrassing photos or videos of their victims online for everyone to see” (Differences…, 1). Bullying has become an increasing problem because of the use of technology as a means of bullying in addition to the traditional type that many people are used to. The effects of cyberbullying can be extremely devastating to teenagers, as stated in the following quote, “Cyberbullying can be so serious that it has resulted in teen suicide” (Teens and Technology 1). The significant psychological and academic repercussions provide a picture of what cyber bullying is doing to our youth. Research suggests children and teens are seen with hightened aggression, sexual curiosity, substance abuse and depression. Another point that is made, suggests teens that cyber bully are themselves targets of similar treatment. The article concludes that adults are the primary defense against bullying. Setting up guidelines and rules is just one small preventative measure.

Ever since the internet became popular in the 1990’s, cyberbullying has been a problem. The dictionary definition of cyberbullying is, “the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person (such as a student) often done anonymously” (“Merriam-Webster”). Cyberbullying has three different perspectives; the victim, the perpetrator, and the bystanders. These various viewpoints, mainly the victim and the bystanders, can be shown through primary and secondary sources. Although both sources agree that bullying is dangerous, the secondary sources are impersonal and based on facts, while the primary sources are about the personal impact of bullying on the victim.

Thesis statement: Social media is one of the major causes of cyber bullying which lead to depression among teenagers. Cyber bullying affects people from any age or walk of life, including children, teens and adults who all feel very distressed and alone when being bullied online. Cyber bullying can make you feel totally overwhelmed which can result in many feeling embarrassed that they are going through such a devastating time, and not knowing what support is available to them. Many children feel unable to confide in an adult because they feel ashamed and wonder whether they will be judged, told to ignore it or close their account which they might not want to do.
This is the first century and technology has never been better. It has become so advanced that it has opened up opportunities for jobs, learning, and bullying. It is now easier than ever to bully someone all hours of the day, and to make the bullying follow them wherever they go. Cyberbullying never used to be much of a problem, in fact it didn’t use to exist. But now with all the new technology, and all the freedom online cyber bullying happens everyday.
Cyberbullying can cause a lot of pain mentally just like mental bullying, while physical bullying can cause both mental and physical harm. Research says “Bullies may intimidate or harass their victims physically through hitting, pushing, or other physical violence” (Bullying 183), “Verbally through such actions as threats or name calling” (Bullying 183), and “Psychologically through spreading rumors, making sexual comments or gestures, or excluding the victim from desired activities” (Bullying 183). Clearly through research one can conclude that various types of bullying can have negative effects from psychological to physical. “Children at greatest risk of being bullied are those who are perceived as social isolates or outcasts by their peers, have a history of changing schools, have poor social skills or a desire to fit in “at any cost,” are defenseless, or are viewed by their peers as being different” (Wienclaw and Frey 256). Statistics say 86% of the 12-15 year olds are reported to be bullied which is the biggest percentage of age group, while 55% of 8-11 year olds are the lowest percentage of kids getting bullied (Wienclaw and Frey
To most people the general stereotype of a bully is a oversized male who physically and verbally harms a smaller weaker student. With the internet any small physically weak child can become as much of a bully as the big and the brute but with even more impact. Second, most children who go through face to face bullying say that when they get home nothing can happen to them, but through the internet anyone can be harmed anywhere and anytime even in their “safe” homes. Cyberbullying can happen in any circumstances making it easier for anyone to bully another. It can happen through any electronic device through texting, the internet, social media, and even video games.
