With senior year ending, the big question is, is college necessary to be successful after high school? With technology on the rise and college prices at an all time high, post secondary school just isn’t right for everyone. The average cost of attending a four-year College is about $40,000 per year. The average student loan debt is about $39,400. Few people if any would refute the fact that the cost of attending post-secondary education has gotten out of hand. In addition, College isn’t necessary for everyone to be successful in life. There is a lot of pressure in these times to go to College because some people feel that College is the only gateway to a successful job and a successful life. However, our generation now has so many different options with technology on the rise. A lot of jobs nowadays do not require a four year College degree. Barton says, “The occupations that are expanding most, don't require a degree. The fields that do aren't adding large numbers of new jobs.” When students think of going to college, they think of getting the tools needed to get a successful job but lots of jobs now don’t require more than a high school diploma. “Occupations that typically need no formal educational credential for entry are projected to grow by 6.9 percent, similar to the growth rate for all occupations. The average cost of four-year public Universities went up by 3.1% in 2017, so I can only imagine how much it will go up after my four years of College. Another thing to consider is how well the institution can prepare you for how the workforce is changing.
