What words come to mind when you hear the name Harry Potter? Of course, you might think of the books or films, but what about the mastermind behind the book. J.K. Rowling is one of the most successful authors in history. Not just because of her books, but also her charity work and influence on people. Thousands of households around the world have continued to use the name Harry Potter since the first book’s publication in 1997 (“500 million Harry Potter books sold worldwide” 1). J.K. Rowling has tackled many hurdles to get her where she is today, a multi-million dollar writer, charity giver and inspiration to many young kids.

Rowling has become one of the richest writers in modern history. The first novel was a resounding success, resulting in Bloomsbury having to print a second round of copies for the public. Today the first edition prints are worth £25,000 or $34,000. After this huge success, Rowling received a grant from a Scottish arts council that allowed her to be a full time writer. The first books popularity in the UK encouraged the American publishing company, Scholastic to pay “$100,000 for the rights to publish the book in America” (Pettinger 2). “Six further titles followed in the Harry Potter series, each achieving record breaking success” (“J.K. Rowling” 2). Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone still remains the best selling book out of the seven book series (“500 million Harry Potter books sold worldwide”). In 1998, J.K. Rowling agreed to allow Warner Bros. to adapt the series into films (Pettinger 3). The first movie was released in 2001 and “in its opening weekend...grossed $90 million in the United States alone” (“Harry Potter (film series)” 4). By this time the fourth book of the series had been released and people all over the world were falling in love with the magical place J.K. Rowling had created. Rowling released the final book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in July of 2007 (Pettinger 3).
