In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Miss Caroline is treated poorly because some of her students think she is picking on a kid that comes from a poor family. In the novel “Hate List”, Valerie Leftman is to return to school five months after her boyfriend, Nick shot several fellow classmates in the school cafeteria. Most of the people shot were on a list Valerie and Nick made and called the hate list. A majority of the school community believes that Valerie was aware of Nick’s plan to kill the kids (she wasn’t aware) despite the fact that Valerie saved someone’s life and got shot in the process. In “Hate List”, Valerie and everyone around her must pick up the broken pieces of fear and sadness after the tragedy. This creates a story that is both universal and so unique that it will leave the reader changed on a fundamental level.
