Did you know that John Brown liberated 11 slaves and fought against slavery? He fought for many people’s freedom and is considered a hero to many. John Brown, an abolitionist, is a hero for his actions against the unjust southern people. He was prepared and willing to die for his cause, he wanted to end all slavery by freeing slaves, and he inspired people in the North to help end slavery. The first reason why John Brown was a hero was because, not only did he, at a young age, set his goal to end slavery, he had the mindset of dying for his cause. A fellow abolitionist named Fredrick Douglass said in one of his speeches in 1881 that, “I would live for the slave, but he would die for him”. That part of his speech shows that even though some may not have wanted to participate, but still supported it, John Brown took the reins of his cause and brought his followers to fight for their cause to the death. Another example of John Brown willing to die for his cause is that when he is captured and executed, he says in his letter to his wife and children, “I feel quite cheerful in the assurance that God reigns and will overrule all for his glory and the best possible good.
