What makes those misbehaved kids in class so misbehaved? Too many of us blame them for being so disruptive, but they do this for a reason. Kids seek attention, they strive to be acknowledge by people, even if it’s in a negative way. However, what leads these kids to seek attention in class, is the lack of attention they receive from their parents. The people who are supposed to give them the most love, care, and attention, often busy themselves with work. This can lead kids into a state of neglect, and therefore instigating misbehavior. The short story, “Just Another Day in Cameron’s Life” demonstrates the idea that negative behavior and attention seeking individuals act the way they do, due to their feelings of neglect by their loved ones. The popular phrase “people want what they don’t have” plays an important role in this story. The kind of love that parents show for their kids is the kind of love Cameron seeks. He does it in all the wrong ways, but it is driven by his feelings of neglect by his parents. “Cameron smirked at his peers, satisfied with the awe in their eyes.” The writer demonstrates how Cameron is pleased when his classmates acknowledge him. Others look at him shocked because of hurting Jake, but Cameron doesn’t see it that way. He is happy with the fact that he is being noticed and payed attention to by his classmates, unlike his parents at home. “Cameron took his usual seat, a green velvety cushion enveloped him and filled him with a kind of warmness he rarely experienced.” The description of the sort of comfort the chair provides, enlightens the reader how Cameron finds pleasure and love in the simple things.
