Rap is more than what the average Joe believes, it is beyond how it gets the listener to move or feel. There are the record sales, cultural influence, and the raw content that makes up a great rap artist. This raises the question in the rap community, who is the best rapper out today? This is debated in forums, between friends, and disputed between anyone who pays attention in rap music. I believe Kendrick Duckworth, or now Kendrick Lamar, is the best rapper currently by far. He is the best rapper by not only the content and who he is outside of rap or the fact that he constantly produces hit after hit, but he has the record sales and awards to back this claim up. On his other album, Good Kid M.A.A.D City, he tells his life story as a young black man growing up in Compton, California and how how he battled the temptation of drugs, violence, and falling victim to the system. On one track, The Art of Peer Pressure, he talks about everyday life and how he fell to the pressure. He explains one incident where he “[r]ushed a n**** quick… that’s ironic, ‘cause I’ve never been violent until I’m with the homies,” (The Art of Peer Pressure). This is a powerful line because it is easy for his audience to relate to as most of them have battled with this before, providing raw content that does not only sound outstanding but is raw and true. Other rappers rap about sex, drugs, or the crazy lifestyle they live, this is okay but it becomes monotonous when every other rapper does the same, thus separating Kendrick into the upper echelon.
