The principal musical innovations of Shakespeare lay in his use of songs. He made significant use of it particularly in his tragedies. He assigned songs to particular characters, printed the texts of the songs and made specific references to them in surrounding dialogues. He created the ‘Tragic Song’. Comic songs were also frequently used. It can also be noticed that he assigned most of the singing to small characters such as servants, fools, clowns, rogues and other minor characters. Major characters never sing except when they were in disguise or in uneasy mental state. In fact, most songs are addressed to the protagonists. One such example can be seen in ‘King Lear’ where the Fool reminds his master’s (Lear) follies through his songs. Shakespeare
