The Story “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, Lady Macbeth, a malicious woman, may just be the tragic hero that started it all without anyone realizing the true crimes she has committed. A tragic hero is a virtuous individual in a tragic story but has a single fatal flaw. In this essay, we will understand how Lady Macbeth is a tragic hero and how she’s flawed by her thirst for power. Lady Macbeth always had an evil and masculine aura around her. While Lady Macbeth may not be the classic tragic hero, her part in the unsightly future events is definitely considered tragic, as she deals with her own suffering, guilt and her plumage into despair. It is very tragic how she went from a manipulative, ambitious woman to a suffering animal that was lost in its despair. Lady Macbeth is the real tragic hero because of her ruthless ambition, guilt and her redemption. This is the classic character arc of a tragic hero. All of that came crashing down as her guilt was eating her from the inside out. It all started after Duncan’s murder, she couldn't keep her composure around guests, but was dealing with it even harder when in private. “This character vs self” is shown through her sleepwalking issues and haunting vision, where she would cleanse her imaginary blood stained hands of all the sins she has committed, “what, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that, he said. You mar all with this starting.” (5.1.40). As she reveals her multiple attempts to cleanse/ atone for what she has committed, this symbolizes the pointless struggle to make the guilt go away from her cold heart.
