In the 1900s, a new wave of nativist spirit with a stronger economic agenda swept the nation. This strong political movement was known as Nationalism. The political movement supported a strong, national pride along with economic development. The new nationalists were urban, middle-class people, recent immigrants or people of racially mixed heritage. These middle-class nationalists strived for change. They were committed to an inclusive vision of change. The nationalists wanted to get rid of the neocolonial ideas and their main goal was industrialization. Nationalism fostered collective self-respect. They did this by taking the meaning of Latin American racial and cultural difference and reinterpreting it in a positive way. They did not want to follow European fashion or culture anymore as they later created their own styles. Latin America created their own styles in painting, music, dance, and literature. These ideas of the nationalists brought forth the idea of unity. Nationalism celebrated racial mixing such as the mixing of indigenous, European, and African genes. This celebration of mixing further shows the idea of unity that nationalism brought forth. Latin American nationalism emphasizes mestizo identities. Additionally, nationalism challenged the idea that European culture was superior. This new idea of nationalism first came about in Mexico. In Mexico, neocolonialism had done its worst and now mixed race people were the majority. It took a revolution for the nationalists to overthrow Porfirio Diaz and his Porfiriato. A conflict between the people and the government brought forth many revolutionaries with different backgrounds. They had different goals as well, but they all wanted to get rid of Porfirio Diaz.
