Being the youngest of three children, I have felt the pressure of playing a role model to my siblings. Growing up in the inner city section of Los Angeles, I have seen many violent scenes in my area. My parents sent me to Lakewood High School to have a better environment while going to school, while there I had the opportunity to play on the girls’ basketball team. I later transferred to Lynwood High School during my junior year. I was involved in sports and an active member of the Young Black Achievers club on campus. During the time I transferred schools, my parents were going through a divorce. It was a really difficult time for me. I made sure to stay focused and determined to do well in school, so I could graduate and go to college. My mother did not finish college and my father did not finish high school. Thru sports I have demonstrated my leadership skill and my athletic ability. I show my leadership by playing point guard on the basketball team. My job as the point guard is to space the floor, make sure we are playing as a team and to control the tempo. Also on the softball field I show my leadership by using communication. Communication is very important on the field because if two players are trying to catch a pop fly and they don’t communicate they will just run right into each other. Another way I show leadership is by engaging in the class discussion and not being a follower. I realized by engaging myself I tend to understand the work better. Also I help my peers with the work if I happen to understand something about the lesson and they don’t. By helping them with the work it helps me, I actually learn more by helping them out with a problem. I believe if you help people out if you see them struggling they will most likely return the favor and help you out when you are
