Position and Role of Leader Joni Dekok is the chief nursing officer of Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. She is the leader of two nurse managers as well as the entire staff of nurses. She is an important member of the nursing team within the hospital and is also a vital member to the executive team at the hospital. She works with the hospital’s administration team, financial team, and CEO to make decisions regarding how the hospital is run. She helps make important decisions and uses her unique view as a nurse leader to help guide other managers and leaders at the hospital. The other nurse leader that I followed was Ashley Hensch. Sanford has always been committed to healing and constantly look for ways to improve care. This organization deeply values courage, family, growth, commitment and organization. Joni also strongly believes that leadership is best done through leading by example. She knows that the most effective leaders often humble themselves to help others and to lead others. She also uses her Christian values throughout her role as a chief nursing officer. She values trusting others and relationships with those she works with. She is also committed to teamwork and collaboration. Ashley’s values are almost exactly the same. The structure allows the nurse managers to form trusting relationships with staff and this allows open lines of communication between leaders and nurses. The nurses know they are valued deeply by each of the nurse leaders. The organizational structure does not hinder the nurse leaders in any way. They have a great balance of working with those above them and below them on the leadership chain. Their communication is effective and teamwork and collaboration are heavily emphasized. One thing that impressed me immensely was the fact that their office doors were always open. This shows how much they care about the people they work with and how open they are to building trusting, lasting relationships with their
