1. I want everyone to feel like they belong in our community, whether it be the University, or the larger Dayton area. Making people feel welcome can be done by accepting and celebrating all different people. John Steinbeck said this of understanding people“If you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and almost always leads to love.” This quote has challenged me to understand people who I do not see eye to eye with. Cultivating a culture of understanding helps everyone feel welcome in a community. I can be a leader by standing up for what I believe in. Sometimes it is hard to do so, but once someone stands up for their beliefs, it becomes easier for more people to do the same. Being a citizen to me, is being an active part of your community. It means you have a responsibility to make sure that, not only you, but everyone in your community has the opportunity to live well. I think that I can be a citizen of Dayton while also being a student at the University by first, paying attention and being informed about all the issues in Dayton, and by playing a more active role by making sure that all members of the Dayton community have a chance for progress. I can do this by partaking in various service opportunities and by participating in government to support the best way to help the community succeed. I can do this by getting involved in service efforts to help those who need it most in Dayton, and also by participating in Dayton government to argue for policies that actively help the needy in Dayton, and provide them with resources that give people a chance to better their life through education and health services.
