Leadership is a process by which one personinfluences the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors of others. Leaders set a direction for the rest of us; they help us see what lies ahead; they help us visualize what we might achieve; they encourage us and inspire us. Without leadership a group of human beings quickly degenerates into argument and conflict,because we see things in different ways and lean toward different solutions. There are several types of leadership style framework are famous and practically being used in managing the project.
The Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid was published in 1964, and it highlights the best leadership style to use, based on the concern for the people and the concern for production or tasks.According to this model, the best leadership style to use is one that has both a high concern for people and a high concern for the task. It argues that project manager should aim for both, rather than trying to offset one against the other.
The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory argues those leaders need to use different leadership styles depending on the maturity of their team members. The model argues that with relatively immature individuals, leader need a more directing approach, while with higher maturity people, they need a more participative or delegating leadership style. Servant Leadership
Servant leadership is leader that has responsibility for the followers.Leaders have a responsibility towards society and those who are disadvantaged.The servant leader serves others, rather than others serving the leader. Serving others thus comes by helping them to achieve and improve. There are two criteria of servant leadership are
The people served grow as individuals, becoming healthier, wiser, and more autonomous and more likely themselves to become servants' (Greenleaf, 1977) and the extent to which the leadership benefits those who are least advantaged in society.
Servant leadership is a natural model for working in the public sector. It requires more careful interpretation in the private sector lest the needs of the shareholders and customers and the rigors of market competition are lost.A challenge to servant leadership is in the assumption of the leader that the followers want to change.
