Seth Marshall Professor: Messersmith Comp 2 2/22/16 Different Leadership Styles All people have different opinions on how a leader should handle things. Such as war, people, poverty, and even themselves. Both Machiavelli in “The qualities of the prince” talks about on how a prince is supposed to be a leader and that good leaders must learn not to be convenient or compassionate to keep stability. Lao Tzu in “Thoughts from the Tao-te Ching” believes in having a silent leader so the people will do what he wants them to do and fill like they are not being guided.
What does it mean to be a servant leader? Servant leaders are constantly focusing on the needs of others before their own. Servant leadership involves an individual demonstrating the characteristics of foresight, awareness, and commitment to personal growth toward others. Servant leaders act for the greater good, even when controversy has the possibility of rising. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks are excellent examples of this.
Hi Erick, This servant leader is about the nicest inspired motivation, and I agree that one should never expect payment for doing a good job. The rewards are being able to help others and in return is job satisfaction. I tell myself this every day when I walk into my unit. The servant leader ultimately creates a caring world, and it showed by inspiring you to pursue a degree.
While watching the movie Remember the Titans, one cannot help but notice many different leadership styles. There are examples of servant leadership and non-examples of servant leadership. Some of the different coach's techniques were effective, yet others were ineffective. This paper will take a close look at the assorted styles of leadership found throughout the film. It will also shed some light on what styles worked and which could have been more effective.
The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast followership leadership and servant leadership. This essay will consist of what followership and servant leadership is and how they serve a purpose in the military. In 1970, “A man named Robert K. Greenleaf created a way that the military looks and practices leadership in a different light” (1) (B112- R.b). That term is servant leadership meaning having a strong feeling to serve others by helping develop them or taking charge. Servant leaders are more of the ones that have a better understanding of awareness, equality and,are good at persuading.
Servant leadership is not the only leadership theory that is compatible with the Christian worldview. Others Christian-compatible leadership principles include Transformational Leadership Theory. Northouse (2016) states transformational changes and transforms people. The theory concern with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and goals while assessing followers’ motives, satisfying followers’ needs, and treating members’ as full human beings. In the beginning of EMS the most dominant style of leadership was based on a transactional approach,rewarding those individuals that follow procedures with positive incentives and reprimanding those that do not with reprimands. However,times are rapidly changing and the servant style of leadership is quickly becoming more acceptable and recognized throughout the industry. The field of EMS is unique, sometimes posing unconventional issues that must be addressed, in addition to those that occur on a daily basis. The servant style of leadership can become an effective and preferred method of leadership when applied in a balanced method. This style of leadership places the emphasis on nurturing the needs of the subordinate employees.
The basic principle of servant leadership is serving others and the community. The three principles of the servant-leadership are sharing the power, putting the needs of others first and helping people achieve their highest potential so that they may want to serve others. This creates an environment of trust, collaboration, teamwork and group improvement. Robert Greenleaf created the term, Servant Leader, and creating the idea of leading by serving with individuals and organizations. In one of his major essay’s, The Institution as Servant, Greenleaf (as cited in “What is Servant Leadership,” n.d.) expressed what was frequently called the “credo.”
For example, corruption should not be the basis upon which a leader makes decisions acts. This would be very selfish, which would dilute the objectives of the organization, community, or society. Additionally, creation of value comes after a servant leader acts or makes decisions. The community, society, and organization should benefit from the outcomes of servant leadership. There is also leadership character which is the center of leadership. The four principles of leadership character according to Organizational Talent Consulting are integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion. These principles are closely related to the characteristics of servant leadership. Before the principles listed, the article gave a brief overview of values and character that read “Decisions between right and wrong often are made based on values, worldview, and past experiences. Leadership character determines how competencies are applied, and it shapes how decisions are implemented.”
To understand, spiritual values are based on two foundations, the first foundation is about exceeding and transcending self, while the second foundation involves the belief that the activities that are carried out by the leader are not just for profit, or for the economic benefits, but are also to promote certain values such as Altruism, love, forgiveness, integrity, courage and Trust (Fry 2003). 2.4.3 Characteristics of Servant Leadership Servant leaders often seek to create and develop their communication and listening skills and try to understand all opinions in addition of being careful that they do not ignore any of the followers before final decisions are made. On the other hand, it is valuable to mention here that servant leaders do not cling to power as they are willing to step down if there is someone who has higher qualifications than them and deserve to be in that position (Page and Wong 2000).
Servant leadership believes one should provide priority to others interest. Leaders should server others to meet their desires, needs and aspiration. Leaders should service and develop their employees (Nahavandi, 2015) leaders do not encourage leaders to go over and beyond to meet the need of the individual problems. Servant leadership listens, persuades, and give empathy during times of crisis. Authentic leaders adapt their style to the situation.
Part C Reflection of Journal Article Change is a process that happens within organisations globally, although at times change could be for the better, employees resist, remain fearful (Burnes, 2017) and not always readily embrace change. This could ultimately be perceived in a negative or positive manner. It all comes down to the Emotional Intelligence coupled with servant leadership as whether it will prove to be successful or not. The concept of servant leadership focuses on fulfilling the needs of the employees, it is a different type of leadership in comparison to other leadership styles, servant leadership is intended to inspire leaders into a more caring and serving leadership role rather than a controlling one (Greenleaf, 1998).
