LGBTQ issues in schools have recently became more prevalent in schools and are increasingly becoming more important. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning and those five categories have many other aspects that play into them. Two of the major elements that LBTQ considers is sex and gender. Sex is the biological and physical traits that a person is born with, while gender is what society tends to connect with the different sexes (such as behavior and activities). Along with sex and LGB we also have to take into consideration sexual orientation, which is the sex that a person is romantically attracted to. LGBTQ plays a large role in education today because there are many controversies that have sparked when it comes to things that society does not think of as being the norm. Although today’s children tend to be more accepting than older generations LGBTQ students are still more likely to be bullied or have people make derogatory comments that are meant to make them feel like they are less than. According to the article: From Teasing to Torment:School Climate in America 90% of LGBTQ teens have been bullied in some way because of many different characteristics that they have (whether it be something that actually makes them up or something that someone believes to be true about them). Also according to the article that was referred to above 69% of teenagers have heard a derogatory remark made using the word “gay” that is meant to undermine the term “gay”. At my high school we did not have bullying and if there was a case people tended to step up or the faculty stepped in. My high school tended to be very accepting and even if you weren’t you still did not have much to say because even though we were a large school we were unified in ways that we did not have many problems contrary to what our community may have
