Listening and hearing are two different concepts. Hearing is when you identify the sound a person makes and listening is when you interpret the message being given. Intellectual characters in novels usually listen for what is being said and others just hear. According to the personality quiz “Do You Listen or Leave Em’ Hanging”, Beatrice in Veronica Roth’s Divergent does not listen to what Four says to her to be stronger and fearless. People who are great listeners unlike Beatrice pay close attention to what people are saying and have some commentary about what they are saying. People who are great listeners “don’t mind listening to the others problems” (95). The narrator Beatrice tends to express her problems to her peers rather than listening to others problems. Beatrice mutes the world around her in the scene where Beatrice is talking to Four in the kitchen she explains how she “wouldn't recognize her if [she] saw her” (300). Beatrice is extremely shy and most people might think she is a great listener but she ponders about her abundance of problems and tunes out the real world. Beatrice hears what is going rather than listening. In the faction, Dauntless; which is known to be fearless and reckless and can be dangerous, Beatrice acts as a robot and just listens to what is being said and does it. In the scene where Four directs the faction to climb a Ferris wheel. Beatrice climbs the Ferris wheel and said, “I hate this but okay” (374). With an abundance on her mind Beatrice seems to remember how her home was like in the different faction Abnegation and how it felt to be with her family. To remember her old faction Beatrice said “I felt safe getting the symbol of Abnegation” (342). Beatrice has an abundance of thoughts on her mind that she is living in a gigantic day
