Ethical Dilemma The Hobby Lobby Chain Corporation and Wheaton College, which is located in Chicago Illinois have both decided to decline birth control coverage to their students and employees, which brings up a very important ethical dilemma in society. Hobby Lobby decided to discontinue providing health insurance that included contraceptives, meanwhile the Wheaton College decided to decline the option of any type of health insurance for incoming freshman students because they felt that the use of contraceptives, including birth control violated the religious ideologies and …show more content…

The ACA is a piece of legislation that attempts to reform the healthcare system. It provides more Americans with Affordable Quality Health Insurance and attempts to curb the growth in healthcare spending in the U.S. the act retains the existing structure of Medicare and Medicaid. The ACA includes rights and protections, rules for insurance Companies, taxes, tax breaks, funding spending and new job creation. ("Affordable Care Act Summary," n.d.) It also mandates individuals to buy insurance and insurers cover essential health benefits; contraceptives being one. The ACA contains a provision that required employers to cover the full range of contraception in their health care plans at no cost to female employees. (College, 2018) Wheaton College also decided to discontinue providing health insurance plans to incoming students. Health care insurance for the faculty and staff was not affected. Prior, the health insurance for the students was part of an enrollment package that could be purchased with tuition payments. The reason for the school to discontinue its health care coverage is another testament to the Affordable Care. Wheaton’s religious principles would be violated if the college continued to provide contraceptives.
