Long term effects of bullying as an adult According to Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, “school bullying is associated with elevated levels of distress in childhood, and the cross-sectional evidence for the ill effects of school bullying on children’s mental and physical health is strong. Bullied children are often socially anxious, and their lives are characterized by feelings of loneliness, depression and low self-esteem. School bullying is also associated with many of the common health complaints of childhood including headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, sore throats and palpitations. In a longitudinal study of a population sample of Finnish children born in 1981, bullying during the early school years was found to be predictive of psychiatric disorder in early adulthood even after controlling for childhood levels of psychiatric symptoms. Adults who recall school bullying also experience higher rates of emotional disorders. Gladstone et al. found that one quarter of adults surveyed in an outpatient depression clinic reported being bullied in childhood and they experienced higher rates of comorbid anxiety”. Status types of bullying
Research states that, “a substantial amount of research has focused on the characteristics of children in the four main status types: bullies, victims, bully/victims, and not involved. Bullies typically have a positive attitude to violence and tend to be aggressive, impulsive and dominant in their interaction with others. In addition, male bullies tend to be physically stronger than boys in general. Male victims hold a negative attitude toward violence and tend not to be aggressive and to be physically weaker than boys in general. Victims report lower levels of self-esteem than not involved peers, and they are typically more anxious and insecure than other children. They tend to feel lonely at school
