A circulating controversial topic is whether man is born with the potential for evil or is raised to do evil. If put into a distressing situation or environment; it is only then when the individual becomes corrupt due to the unfamiliarity. One is not born intentionally evil, instead they are raised through various influences that shape the character of the individual for the later future. Such mentality can be displayed in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Natasha Pace’s article, “Masked Men spreading cheer in Halifax with random acts of kindness”.

Although the majority of the boys convert to savageness when occupying the island for too long, a minority of the boys continue to strive and better the group at the same time. Such characters include Simon, Piggy, and Ralph. Simon symbolizes peace and reassurance for the boys. This is exemplified when Simon hovers around the younger of the boys and proceeds throughout the story to guide and assist them. As Ralph begins to lose hope, Simon is the individual to reassure him that he will return home and be liberated from the island. Piggy on the other hand represents intelligence and stability. Piggy is the individual to fight for and encourage the use of the conch within the group of the boys. The conch encourages civilization and disrupts the savageness that occurs for each of the boys. It brings order and stability to the group. Although Ralph loses his sanity at some points of the novel such as when he participates in the hunting of the pig and becomes proud upon his actions; Ralph is shown mainly as a leader who owns up to his actions when encountering the adult towards the end of the novel and taking responsibility for the inconveniences regarding the group of boys. The men traveling around the city helping those in need by providing food and essential items are deemed to be selfless due to the fact that they humbly wear masks to hide their identities. This is an act of selflessness because while wearing the masks, they receive no recognition or benefits furthermore concluding that they do it solely because of their caring nature. It can be inferred they act such way due to outside influences or even just the environment they grew up in that taught them to better the world and assist others in need. The small acts of kindness done by the goodness of their hearts spreads hope to others further debunking the central idea that all individuals are born for the potential to do
